Joe Joe Ngai relentlessly explores our different layers of reality, the social reality that one must share daily and the inner reality alive only within one's mind.

His work reflects the ongoing contrast between the self-recognition and the social recognition of our identity and existence.

"I have always been intrigued by the relationship between familiar and unfamiliar memories, not settled though settled, between conscious and unconscious recognition and identity.

I not only attempt to define these two layers but also to create a layer by which to connect them.

Through my painting I wish to give the viewers a sense of freedom from the truth of the subject through their imagination, without limiting their viewing experience to a particular time and space."
